Toxic blue green algae has been found in four lakes in Cumbria:

  • Windermere
  • Ullswater
  • Coniston
  • Killington Lake

The Environment Agency has reissued a warning about the dangers of the algae, which can pose a health risk to people and animals.

Water affected by blue green algae may appear to be green, blue-green or greenish brown and can produce musty, earthy or grassy odours. Blooms can also cause foaming on the shoreline, which can sometimes be confused with sewage pollution.
