West Cumbrian rivals to go head-to-head

The West Cumbrian 'Old Firm' are to go head-to-head this weekend. Workington Town will play rivals Whitehaven in Rugby League's Championship One on Sunday. The teams have been in good form this season, and are both on course for promotion.

Dave Bowden, Chairman of Working Town RLFC, said that fans can expect a "real cracker of a game." Town, who are second in the table, have beaten their rivals twice this year already.

But Don Gailer, Head Coach at Whitehaven RLFC, said that his team, who are fourth in the table, will be staying "focused on the end goal."

Motor racing championship back at Croft

It is one of the biggest weekends of the year for motorsport fans in the region. The British Touring Car Championship is back at Croft, with qualifying rounds taking place this Saturday. The annual event traditionally draws huge crowds to the circuit near Darlington.

Matt Neal, reigning British Touring Car Champion, won there last year and hopes to reclaim his title at this year's event.

Blues complete Cadamateri deal

Carlisle United have signed former England Under-21 international Danny Cadamateri.

The 32-year-old joins the Cumbrians on two-year deal after his contract with Huddersfield expired at the end of last season.

Carlisle manager Greg Abbott said:

"Danny is a very experienced player who we have watched for a while and I know from talking to him that he has a real hunger to play the game and push on. He knows what we want to do at this club and he wants to be part of it.

"He's a player who will give us a number of options going forward and in midfield and he's one who we think will have a positive impact in the dressing room as well."

– Greg Abbott, Carlisle United Manager

Cadamateri began his career with Everton and has had spells at Bradford, Leeds United, Sheffield United, Leicester, Huddersfield, and Dundee United.
