A robbery in a quiet village post office just outside carlisle has been described as an outrageous crime that left a shop assistant terrified. They were the words of the judge who sentenced two armed robbers to six years in prison.

Police respond to robbery sentence

Two men who carried out an armed robbery at a post office near Carlisle have each been sentenced to six years in prison.

The robbery happened at Wetheral post office in June. A female shop keeper, working behind the counter, was threatened at knife point and between seven hundred and eight hundred pounds was stolen.

Matthew Scott who's 25 and 21 yr old Kye Halliburton - both from Carlisle - admitted the offences at an earlier hearing.

Robbers jailed for six years

Two men who carried out an armed robbery at a post office near Carlisle have each been sentenced to six years in prison. The robbery happened at Wetheral post office in June. A woman shop keeper working behind the counter, was threatened at knife point. Nearly £800 was stolen from the till.

Matthew Scott, 25, of Ellesmere Way, Carlisle, and Kye Halliburton, 21, of Harker Park Road, Carlisle, were caught on CCTV and admitted the offences at an earlier hearing.

The judge, Paul Batty QC said:

"I have no doubt the village of Wetheral and the whole of Cumbria was shocked when it heard of this crime. You targeted a vulnerable person to get money for drugs. She was absolutely terrified and traumatised by what you did. The effect on her has been devastating. This was an outrageous crime." The shop assistant was praised for her bravery and will be awarded £250 out of public funds."

Armed robbery sentencing

Two men will be sentenced at Carlisle crown court after pleading guilty to the armed robbery of Wetheral Post Office on the outskirts of Carlisle.

Matthew Scott, who is 24 from Ellesmere Way in Morton Carlisle and 20 year old Kye Haliburton from Harker Park Road in Carlisle pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing.

The judge said they should expect substantial prison sentences.
