A woman in her 70s died in hospital after being pulled out of the River Derwent in Cockermouth.
Cumbria police were called at 12:40pm to reports that a woman was in the water near to Jennings brewery.
Following a joint rescue operation between police, fire and ambulance crews the woman was taken to the West Cumberland Hospital where she later died.
Police are now trying to determine how she came to be in the river.
Cumbria Police have told ITV Border that a woman has been rescued from the River Derwent in Cockermouth earlier today.
The woman has been taken to the West Cumberland General Hospital.
Police said it was a join rescue operation fire and ambulance crews.
It is unknown at this time how the woman ended up in the river.
