A stretch of the A66 which has been shut for most of the day following a crash has been reopened. The road, between Penrith and Appleby, was closed for recovery work after a head on crash involving two lorries. Both drivers were airlifted to hospital in Middlesbrough with serious injuries.

Cumbria Police say a stretch of the A66 will remain closed until this afternoon following a crash. Rescue and recovery work is taking place to remove the vehicles involved. The accident happened near to Center Parcs, east of Penrith.

Cumbria Police say diversions are in place. Motorists can use the A65 and A69, the A685 can be used at Brough to join the M6 for westbound traffic but height and weight restrictions apply to the route.
