A two year-old boy who suffered facial injuries after being attacked by the family's pet Lurcher is set to be released from hospital.

The toddler, who hasn't been named, was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary yesterday afternoon. He suffered serious wounds to his face but is said to be recovering well. He is expected to leave hospital later today.

Police release statement after dog attack on toddler

A Cumbria Police spokesman said:

"At approximately 2.40pm today emergency services were alerted to an incident at premises on Gilbert Road in Cummersdale whereby a two-year-old child had been attacked by the family dog.

"The child was conveyed to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle and underwent surgery for serious facial injuries.

"The dog was removed from the premises and is currently kennelled pending an investigation into the incident by police and social services."

Toddler attacked by family dog in Cumbria

A two-year-old boy has been taken to hospital after being attacked by a family dog in Cumbria.

Police said the child suffered facial injuries during the incident at an address on Gilbert Road, Cummersdale, near Carlisle at around 2:40pm. He has since undergone surgery at the Cumberland Infirmary.

The dog has been placed in kennels pending a joint investigation with social services, Cumbria Police said.
