The Hawick Common Riding for 2013 is underway, with the Cornet and his lass kicking off festivities in the Borders town.

Profile: Cornet's Lass Heather Amos

This year's Cornet Lass is 19-year-old Heather Amos.

Heather is the daughter of Tam and Karal and has an older sister Cheryl, and an older brother Shaun.

She is a former pupil of Trinity Primary and Hawick High School.

Heather is near to completing her apprenticeship as a hand sewer at Hawick Cashmere.

Apart from riding horses, she enjoys going to the gym, swimming and socialising.

Heather's family have long been associated with the Common Riding, and her cousin Craig Niblo was Cornet in 1992.

This year's Cornet is 23-year-old Chris Ritson from Hawick.

Chris is the eldest son of Jimmy and Susan Ritson and he has two old sisters, Sarah and Michelle, and a younger brother, Philip.

Chris is a former pupil of Drumlanrig Primary School and Hawick High School and now works at Richard Brown Forestry Contractors.

He first followed Cornet Craig Rogerson in 2004 and has been following every year since then. Chris will be using his own 16-year-old 17hh chesnut gelding, Troy, for the Common Riding today.

Chris has longed to be the Cornet since he was a young boy and says his dream has come true.

When not riding Troy, Chris enjoys playing rugby- which has been his main interest for the last 15 years.
