Cumbria Police have released the name of a man who died in Thirlmere Reservoir, near Keswick, yesterday.

Muhammad Bilal Bhaty was 28 and from Pakistan. He drowned after getting into difficulties in the water. His sister survived and was taken to hospital.

The incident follows the deaths of two teenage girls who drowned in the River Wear, near Sunderland, on Tuesday night.

Man who died in reservoir was visiting with family

A man who died in Thirlmere Reservoir in Keswick after getting into difficulty was visiting with a group of people, including family.

Police have named the 28-year-old as Muhammad Bilal Bhaty (known as Bilal), from Pakistan.

Officers were called to the scene about 3pm yesterday, July 24, by a member of the public after two people were seen to be in distress in the water.

Emergency services attended and his sister, aged 22, was rescued from the water.

She received medical attention and was taken to Cumberland Infirmary. She was later released from hospital.

The difficulty experienced in the water is believed to have been caused by the cold temperature of the reservoir.

Police are not treating the incident as suspicious.
