Carlisle cinema to be demolished

One of Carlisle's best known buildings, which sold at an auction for £630,000, is to be demolished.

A huge campaign was launched to save the former Lonsdale Cinema when it faced closure seven years ago but it was ultimately unsuccessful.

The Art Deco property once hosted concerts by the likes of the Beatles but has now fallen into disrepair.

The building was bought by a group of Carlisle businessmen who plan to demolish the building.

They are also the owners of the building next door, which they are turning into a boutique hotel.

The former Lonsdale Cinema in Carlisle is going up for auction in a move that local businesses hope will help boost City Centre regeneration.

The cinema, which closed in 2006, is being sold with a guide price of £550,000.

The building was constructed in the 1930's and the premises are situated within a Conservation Area, which were de-listed in 2010.
