Galashiels toddler drowns in hotel pool

A murder investigation has been launched after a toddler from Galashiels drowned in a swimming pool near Blackpool.

Officers found the three-year-old at the Dalmeny hotel in St Annes. She died later that day in hospital Thursday 14 August. A 40-year-old woman from Scotland was arrested on suspicion of murder and child neglect. She has been released on bail, pending further enquiries until 15th November.

A 40-year-old woman from the Scottish Borders remains in police custody this evening, following the death of a toddler in a swimming pool.

The three-year-old girl from Galashiels died in hospital after being pulled out of the water at a hotel in St Anne's in Lancashire.

The woman is being held on suspicion of murder and neglect but Police have stressed the child's death is being treated as unexplained. Investigations are continuing.

Toddler's death is being treated as 'unexplained'

The death of a three-year-old girl from Galashiels is being treated by police as unexplained.

Police in Blackpool are continuing their investigation after the toddler drowned at the Dalmeny Hotel, in St Anne's yesterday, Thursday 14 August.

“We are treating this tragic incident as an unexplained death and are continuing to investigate just how the child has come into difficulties in the pool.

“Our thoughts remain with the child’s family at this sad time.”

A Home Office post-mortem will take place in due course to establish the cause of death and a 40-year-old woman from Galashiels remains in police custody. She was arrested suspicion of murder and child neglect.

It's thought the girl was on holiday in the Blackpool area.

She was pulled out of the pool by a member of the public who tried to save her, before being taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital and then to Manchester Children's Hospital where she passed away. Watch: Witness tried to save toddler from pool.

Witness tried to save toddler from pool

Carole Greenwood says she resuscitated the toddler at the side of the pool at the Dalmeny Hotel in St Anne's, Lancashire.

She was using the pool yesterday morning, Thursday 14 August, and when she came out of the changing rooms and saw the little girl at the bottom of the pool.

As a trained lifesaver she dived in to save her. She says her training kicked in and she did all she could.

Police say the three-year-old is from Galashiels in the Scottish Borders.

A woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a three-year-old girl drowned in a hotel swimming pool in St Anne's, Lancashire.

The child, who was believed to have been staying at the seaside hotel with her parents, got into difficulty in the water at the Dalmeny Hotel, in St Annes, near Blackpool, at around 11am yesterday.

She was initially pulled from the water and taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital, but after being transported to Royal Manchester Children's Hospital in a critical condition, the girl, from Galashiels, Scotland, died at around 8pm yesterday.

A 40-year-old woman, from Galashiels, Scotland, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and child neglect and remains in police custody.

Detective Inspector Nick Connaughton from Blackpool CID said: "This is a tragic situation where a young girl has lost her fight for life following an incident at a swimming pool in a hotel in St Annes.

"We are now treating this sad death as suspicious and are investigating just how the child has come into difficulties in the pool."

A spokesman for the 100-bedroom Dalmeny Hotel declined to comment.
