The A592 has been blocked at Newby Bridge roundabout, after an accident involving a lorry and two cars.
The fire service are at the scene, and the incident is affecting traffic between Newby Bridge and Lakeside.
Workers are digging a series of channels underneath the A592 near Ullswater.
The idea is that the next time there is heavy rain, it will wash down the fells and go under the road, rather than damaging the surface.
Police are reminding motorists of ongoing roadworks which have closed the A592.
The road will be closed in both directions on Monday 26th January, Wednesday 28th January and Thursday 29th January between 7.30am and 5.30pm.
The road will be open on Tuesday 27th January where temporary traffic lights will be in place.
Police advise motorists to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.
The A592 at Kirkstone Pass is closed from Pooley Bridge over to Ambleside because of bad weather conditions.
The road is completely closed at the summit of the pass - stopping vehicles from getting through.
A lorry fire has resulted in the closure of the A592 between the Rheged round about and the Snuff Mill Cottage junction at Stainton.
The incident happened at about 1.30am this morning but the vehicle is still too hot to recover.
There may also be some damage to the surface of the road.
Cars and vans are being diverted through Stainton.
Emergency Services are currently dealing with an RTC on the A592 between Kirkston Pass Inn and Troutbeck.
Road is closed and will they have advised it will be for some time while an investigation takes place.
