First black policeman was from Carlisle

"People might not know this but Cumbria has a claim to fame, and that is that the very first black policeman to go on the beat in Britain was called John Kent and he was in Carlisle in the early 19th century. He served in the Carlisle police force in the 1830's.

Exhibition part of 'black history month'

An exhibition exploring the contribution black people made to Cumbria's history has gone on display.

Cumbria's hidden heritage is a collection of documents from the 18th and 19th century looking at the men and women who made Cumbria their home.

The exhibition, at the Archive Centre in Carlisle, highlights Cumbria and south-west Scotland's involvement in the slave trade.
