Lockerbie bombing inquiry petition

Campaigners who want an inquiry into the trial and conviction of the Lockerbie bomber will take their case to the Scottish Parliament.

A petition will be handed into Holyrood's Justice Committee urging for an inquiry into the conviction Al Megrahi, who died earlier this year of cancer.

The group, who includes Dr Jim Swire, whose daughter died in the bombing, say the recent revelations of the inquiry into the Hillsborough disaster show the importance of continuing their campaign to make sure justice is done.

They are asking for the trial to be re -examined after questions have been raised in relation to evidence of expert witnesses.

Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill is to make a statement to Holyrood in the wake of claims he advised the Lockerbie bomber to drop his appeal to smooth the way for his release.

The allegations, strongly denied by the Scottish Government, are in a book about the bomber, published on Monday.
