Newton Stewart clean up begins

Homes and businesses in Newton Stewart are mopping up after torrential rain brought some of the worst flooding in living memory.

Saturated ground, a high tide and constant rain on Sunday and Monday combined to make the River Cree wash into parts of the town.

A car park next to the river was under several feet of water.

Some flats had to be evacuated and water seaped into the Belted Galloway visitor centre, which is closed while the clean up continues.

Local people say the water levels were certainly as high as floods in the 1980's and probably as high as the 60's.

Mountain rescue teams went to pick up several people whose cars were stranded in flood water.

Water levels have now fallen.
