First Minister statement on Algerian hostage crisis

Commenting on the current hostage situation in Algeria, Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond said:

"The full extent of the Algerian hostage crisis is still not known but this is clearly a tragic situation and our thoughts at this difficult time are with the families

"We are not confirming numbers or other details at this stage as the situation continues to be fluid and is not yet resolved.

"However, our police service in Scotland have confirmed that a number of people identified as resident in Scotland, who had been held captive in the In Amenas facility, and of whom I spoke yesterday in parliament, have now been confirmed as safe and well."

"The Scottish police forces involved have all done an excellent job in difficult circumstances in identifying those individuals who live in Scotland and contacting their families.

"In each case police officers continue to offer every support to the families at this worrying and uncertain time.

“We continue to work closely with the UK Government to monitor the situation and stand ready to offer any assistance we possibly can. Our thoughts remain with all of those who are affected by this tragedy.”

First Minister confirms Scots held hostage in Algeria

Scotland's First Minister has confirmed that a number of Scots are among the hostages being held by Islamic militants in Algeria.

Alex Salmond made a statement to MSPs this afternoon after speaking with the Prime Minister, David Cameron.

He said:

"I can confirm to the chamber a number of Scots are among the hostages. The UK Government reports one UK national has been killed in the attack.

"I know the chamber will understand that in the interests of the safety and security of the hostages, the information that can be given out is limited. The priority is their safety and to keep the families informed.

"The Scottish Police Service is fully engaged with the Metropolitan police on this matter. Scottish Government ministers are in contact with Foreign Commonwealth Offices."

Scots among Algeria hostages

Scotland's First Minister, Alex Salmond, has confirmed that a number of Scots are among the hostages taken on the oil rig in Algeria.

In a statement Mr Salmond said he has spoken to the Prime Minister, but the information is limited and the main priority is their safety and to keep their families informed.

Scottish Government Ministers are in contact with the foreign office and the whole chamber is united in condemnation of the attack.
