200 schoolchildren competing in the 14th annual Lanercost Cross Country competition were joined by Olympian and Great North Run founder Brendan Foster. The former long-distance runner, who won bronze in the 10,000 metre event at the 1976 Olympics started the races which took place in the fields around Lanercost Priory.
He founded the Great North Run, which is the biggest annual running event in the UK. The event at Lanercost was slightly smaller, but hundreds of family, friends and even ferrets turned out to cheer on the runners, who were aged between 3 and 11 years old.
