Cumbria Police are investigating the cause of a large fire in west Cumbria.

The fire broke out at the former Alcan factory site in Lillyhall just before 11pm on Wednesday 4 July.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

The site contains high levels of asbestos and police are urging anyone that was on the site to consider seeking medical attention.

Officers say they are working alongside firefighters to establish the cause.

We are working with the fire service to establish the circumstances and to identify any potential causes.

During initial investigative work it has become clear that the site contains high level of asbestos which could be harmful to those that have been in close proximity. I would urge anyone that may have been on the site to seek medical attention.

There is no suggestion that the fire would cause any ill-health to the wider public."

George Osborne's review surprised many people. Credit: PA

Lillyhall, in Workington, has missed out on a bid to become an Enterprise Zone.

In his Spending Review, Chancellor George Osborne announced that Kingmoor Park in Carlisle will be one of 25 new or extended zones.

But while Kingmoor Park has been successful, Lillyhall business park in Workington has NOT been named one of the Enterprise Zones.
