'Borders has lowest teenage pregnancy rate in Scotland'

MSPs have started investigating if strategies aimed at reducing Scotland's teen pregnancy rates are working.

It comes after a report in June showed a key Scottish Government target for cutting pregnancy rates in under-16s was missed.

According to recent figures , Fife has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Scotland and NHS Borders has the lowest, with five under-16s in every thousand becoming pregnant.

Scotland has a higher rate of teenage pregnancy than most other Western European countries.

Teenage girls living in deprived areas are four times more likely to become pregnant than those living in affluent areas.

MSPs on the Health and Sport Committee want to hear from midwives, social workers and children's charities to determine if Scotland could be doing more to tackle the issue.
