Full Report: Whitehaven joins the festival blues

There is huge disappointment in Whitehaven following the news that its popular festival will not go ahead next year.

The event, which attracts around a quarter of a million people, has grown into one of the biggest outdoor events in Cumbria.

The organisers say a series of other events will take place in the town instead.

It is the second festival this week though to announce it won't go ahead next year.

Celebrity chef Jean Christophe Novelli said: 'The wonderful thing aboutthis festival is that it is free. I've been coming for six years and I see old faces and new ones. It is very special. But the best thing is the local produce. Cumbria is very lucky for that.'
