Cumbria Police are investigating an assault in a village just outside Carlisle.
It happened outside the Crown Hotel in Wetheral. A man has told police that up to 5 men grabbed him from behind and then he was repeatedly kicked and punched by two of them and being hit with a metal bar.
He sustained some serious injuries to his head, arms and body. When the victim began to fight back the attackers ran away, making off along station road into the centre of the village.
Police are keen to reassure residents that this was an isolated attack, possibly related to an earlier dispute between the victim and the attackers.
A 20 year old man has been arrested and bailed pending further enquires.
