Queen of the South Chairman Davie Rae says Allan Johnston is the right man to lead the club back to the Scottish First Division.
The former Scotland international takes over from Gus MacPherson, who left the Doonhamers this week following their relegation to Division Two.
Rae, who is stepping down as Chairman at the end of the season, said: "He's been a player for the last year or two at the club.
"He has a vast amount of experience and he's also got a tremendous amount of contacts with all managers throughout Scotland and the north of England.
He added: "[Queen of the South] has to bounce straight back next year. That's an absolute positive. That's the way we must think."
Johnston has played for a number of clubs in Scotland including Hearts, Rangers, Kilmarnock and St. Mirren.
The 38-year-old has also had spells with Sunderland, Middlesbrough, and spent one season with French side Rennes.
