Plans for new homes rejected

Councillors have rejected a petition calling for a referendum over controversial plans to build thousands of new homes in the South Lakes. South Lakeland District council says the plan will provide desperately needed social housing.

At last night's meeting councillors voted 30 to 13 to reject the petition signed by 3,000 local residents. However those for the scheme say there are many who want these homes built because there is a shortage of social housing in the South Lakes.
