Man critical after 100ft Helvellyn fall

A man is in a critical condition after falling 100 feet whilst walking in the Lake District. It happened on Fairfield, close to Helvellyn. The 30 year old was flown to the James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough by the Great North Air Ambulance with head and spinal injuries.

The rescue involved members of Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team and a Navy helicopter which winched him from the mountain and flew him to the valley where he was seen by an air ambulance doctor before being transferred to hospital.
