A woman in her 70s died in hospital after being pulled out of the River Derwent in Cockermouth.
Cumbria police were called at 12:40pm to reports that a woman was in the water near to Jennings brewery.
Following a joint rescue operation between police, fire and ambulance crews the woman was taken to the West Cumberland Hospital where she later died.
Police are now trying to determine how she came to be in the river.
