First black policeman was from Carlisle
– Tom Robson, Senior Archivist, Cumbria Archive Centre"People might not know this but Cumbria has a claim to fame, and that is that the very first black policeman to go on the beat in Britain was called John Kent and he was in Carlisle in the early 19th century. He served in the Carlisle police force in the 1830's.
