Pedestrians hit by car

Two pedestrians have been rushed to hospital with serious injuries after being struck by a car in a Borders town.

It happened at around 10.55a.m. Friday 7th December outside the George and Abbotsford Hotel in High Street, Melrose.

Emergency services treated the casualties at the scene they wre then taken to Borders general Hospital with what are described as "serious injuries".

The two pedestrians are believed to be a 47 year old man and a woman.

Lothian and Borders Police say they are still trying to establish exactly what happened and the road through the centre of Melrose was closed to allow a full accident investigation to take place.

A spokesman said:

"We are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to come forward."
