Hospital to cancel all planned surgery

Staff at South Tyneside District Hospital have been forced to cancel all planned surgery due to an unprecedented volume of emergency activity. No beds are available due to people attending the Accident and Emergency Department whose condition does not require immediate attention.

"We would ask people to do all their very best to attend their GP practice, Minor Injuries Units, Walk-in Centres, or local chemist for advice and avoid attending A&E wherever possible. Despite opening a significant number of additional beds, we are having great difficulty in accommodating those very sick patients who require a bed in the hospital and any assistance our local population of South Tyneside can offer us by avoiding attending A&E would be greatly appreciated.”
