A charity that specialises in debt management says that the number of people from Carlisle contacting their helpline has dropped.
For the first nine months of 2012, the average StepChange Debt Charity client in Carlisle owed £15,760, compared to £17,709 in 2011.
Despite the drop, StepChange Debt Charity is warning people over the dangers of debt consolidation.
They say people will be struggling with multiple debts including credit cards, overdrafts and payday loans, especially after Christmas.
