Boy falls down Cumbrian mountain

A 10-year-old boy has been flown to hospital after falling 50 metres down a snow-covered mountain in the Lake District.

The boy, from Preston, was climbing down Swirral Edge ridge on Helvellyn.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue said the boy was with his father, when he slipped on a steep slope.

A doctor and paramedic were dropped on the ridge by air ambulance.

They treated the boy for suspected head injuries on the mountain, before flying him to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
