Scotland's First Minister has welcomed the appointment of Pope Francis.
Addressing MSPs this afternoon, Alex Salmond said:
"His election will be a great encouragement to our Catholic community, who are such an important and highly valued part of the fabric of Scotland.
"The Pope's first message urging greater bonds of understanding between peoples and nations is one that will resonate around the world and we wish the church well under the leadership of Pope Francis."
