Carlisle Crown Court has heard that a 32-year-old man was stabbed seven times outside his house as he got ready to go to work.
Three people are charged with murdering Piotr Kulinski and a further two people are also accused of conspiring to pervert the course of justice by allegedly helping to cover up the murder.
The court heard that there had been previous disagreements between the victim and the defendant, one of which was reported to the police.
