The War Memorials Trust has criticised vandals who sprayed paint onto a memorial in Dumfries.
The Maxwelltown and Troqueer statue was defaced last week.
Many of the men listed have no known graves.
The memorial contains the names of 200 servicemen who lost their lives, including two Victoria Cross winners.
Paul Goodwin from Scottish War Memorials says younger people's ignorance of the events of last century is fuelling their lack of respect for the young men from their local community who died during the first world war.
