The Carlisle City flag is flying at half mast outside of the Civic Centre in memory of Councillor Joe Hendry.
Tributes have been coming in for the leader of Carlisle City Council who died aged 67.
The Deputy Leader of Carlisle City Council, Colin Glover, said:
"Everyone is in shock. I saw him on Wednesday and he appeared to be getting better."
John Mallinson, Leader of the Opposition, said:
"We may have been in different parties and had different opinions but we worked together verywell and I regarded him as my friend."
