Shortly after 5:30pm the first fire was reported near the Newton Gardens Filling Station on Glasgow Road. Ten square metres of bush land had already been destroyed before fire fighters were able to extinguish the flames.
A second smaller fire was discovered on the verge of Irongray Road shortly before 7pm. the Fire Service believe that both may have been set deliberately and are warning that in the current warm spell more damage could easily have been done as grass fires can quickly get out of hand.
