Police warning over bogus workers

Police Scotland are warning householders to take extra care when hiring workmen for their house and gardens after a rise in bogus work type crime.

People are being urged to make sure the workers are from a reputable company with a proven track record of good workmanship.

“It is never a particular good idea to employ cold callers to carry out any type of work. There are a high number of quality local tradesmen who can be engaged as and when required.

“In all instances householders should insist on a written quote and where practical should insist in payment by cheque only as opposed to cash and in no circumstances agree to accompany such people to your bank to obtain cash.

“In addition we would hope that family, friends or neighbours would intervene to protect the more vulnerable in our communities and would further encourage everyone to report details of any such incidents to police on 101 as soon as possible."
