The A684 has been closed between Kendal and Sedburgh Road following a crash involving a sports car and a bus.
Paramedics are at the scene, as well as the Fire Service and the Highways Agency.
The collision happened at junction 37 of the M6 just after midday.
The road remains closed and police are advising that it will be for some time.
They are therefore suggesting that motorists use an alternative route.
