John Brown, 47, of Winderbow Avenue inKeswick, is charged with nine counts of arson with intent to endanger life and six of arson.
It is alleged that between March 2011 and January 2013 he committed the offences, including starting fires at two houses and a pub.
He was remanded in custody until 30 September after a brief appearance before magistrates in Workington. No pleas were entered.
