Carlisle train station is about to undergo a major transformation after an investment of £2 million from the Department of Transport was announced.
Passengers will benefit from better access with new lifts and a new subway.
The scheme, which is set to begin this Autumn, will make the station fully accessible for the first time.
The work is being delivered by Network Rail as part of the Access for All programme.
Martin Frobisher, Network Rail area director, said:
"These vital improvements to Carlisle station will make life easier for everyone to use the train, especially those with heavy luggage, reduced mobility or with small children.
"The new facilities will help Carlisle station handle the increasing numbers of passengers who are using it every day."
