Silver lining for metal detectorists

A treasure hunter has told how a five-hour search in atrocious weather ended with him and a fellow enthusiast netting a haul of medieval silver coins.

Derek McLennan and Gus Paterson reportedly used metal detectors to discover the coins in a field at Twynholm, near Kirkcudbright in Dumfries and Galloway, shortly before Christmas.

Overall, the men netted 322 coins, which are said to carry images of various monarchs of the time.
