Emergency services have praised members of the public who pulled a family of five free from their car moments before it burst into flames.
They said that if it hadn't been for the quick actions of motorists and passers by, the incident could have resulted in fatalities.
The Mercedes estate did set on fire, but all the occupants were pulled free by members of the public. It was their quick reaction that ensured those involved were taken to safety prior to car igniting."
The family-of-five are from the Southampton area. The dad, aged 43, has life threatening injuries.
Injuries to the 43 year old mum and the couple's three children are less serious.
The driver of the other vehicle, 61 year old woman from Sheffield was treated for minor injuries.
