The MP for Penrith and the Border, Rory Stewart, is on his way to Iraq to monitor the situation as Islamist militants continue to spread violence across the country.

As chair of the Defence Select Committee in Parliament, the Conservative MP will gather information in the Kurdish city of Irbil. He's expected to stay there for five days. The 41-year-old was deputy governor of two provinces in Iraq after the second Gulf War in 2003.
