Early indications show that a 'domestic appliance' could be to blame for a major fire at a hotel in Kirkcudbright, according to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

More than 30 firefighters and five fire engines were deployed to the Gordon House hotel on Thursday evening, when a large fire broke out at the rear of the building.

Residents in the hotel and surrounding properties were evacuated, but no injuries were sustained.

The fire took several hours to control, due to the difficulty of it's source at the rear of the hotel.

"The fire was out the back on a flat roof section of the building, which is an extension of this listed building. It broke through the roof quite quickly so it was important for crews to get there quickly. There was a danger to our crews of a possible collapse so we initially fought the fire from outside."

A full investigation will now begin to determine what exactly caused the fire.
