Local politicians react to Theresa May's snap general election announcement

The prime minister said she had "only recently and reluctantly" come to the decision.

It comes less than a month after Downing Street said an early election was "not going to happen".

Theresa May says the government is developing a nationwide modern industrial strategy, which will be tailor made for regions like Cumbria.

Carlisle Conservative MP, John Stevenson, asked Theresa May during PMQ's today, if the government would commit to a strategy which takes into account Cumbria's tourism, nuclear and agricultural industries.

The government says the strategy will make the economy work for everyone and deliver highly skilled, highly paid jobs, and develop more competitive world-leading businesses:
