The first phase of construction of a cycleway along Burton road in Kendal has begun.
The first phase of the three-metre-wide cycleway will run from Kirkbie Kendal School along to Asda.
The second phase of works is scheduled to begin in April 2018 and will extend passed the Asda to the railway bridge at Natland.
The project is a joint venture between Cumbria county Council and Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership.
Funded by the government, they hope the new cycle way will "enhance Kendal's infrastructure", make the town more accessible for people and encourage people to ride their bicycles more - reducing congestion and promoting a healthier lifestyle.
The first phase of work is expected to be completed in June.
