Carlisle United lost out to Sunderland in the second round of the EFL Cup, played at Brunton Park on Tuesday evening.

Sunderland led at half-time after Donald Love's opener who scored in the 34th minute.

In front of an 8,187 crowd United rallied in the second half and equalised in the 60th minute when Danny Grainger followed up after Robben Ruiter saved his initial penalty.

But Blues hearts were to be broken when Lynden Gooch, a USA international, scored the winner for Sunderland in the 80th minute.

United had given the championship side a fright, but ultimately Sunderland proved too strong and it is they who will be in the draw for the next round when it takes place in China tomorrow morning.

Manager Keith Curle said he was proud that Carlisle had managed to push Sunderland all the way,

"I don't like losing football matches, but if you are going to lose a cup tie that's the way to do it," he said.
