Two collisions have blocked the M6 at Carlisle.

All three lanes northbound and two lanes of the southbound carriageway are closed between junctions 41 and 42.

A HGV collided with the central reservation and has shed its load on both the north and part of the southbound carriageway.

The second incident involved a van pulling a trailer which jack-knifed when braking.

The drivers of both the HGV and the van are not injured.

Only one lane of the southbound carriageway is open and delays are to be expected for some time whilst recovery is underway.

A diversion is in place northbound with traffic leaving the M6 at Junction 41 and following the A6 and re-joining the M6 at Junction 42.

Emergency services are dealing with both incidents and are urged not to turn around until instructed by Police Officers to do so.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area and follow diversions.
