A chef is starting a three year jail sentence for a drunken attack on her boyfriend that almost killed him. But Gregory Todd has now forgiven Tiffany Baillie for knifing him in the back and presented her with a diamond engagement ring. He says she has accepted his proposal and he hopes they will get married as soon as she is released.
The pair had returned to their home in Hessle near Hull on the evening of December 4, 2011 after an evening of drinking. Ms Baillie, 32, was upset about a miscarriage she had suffered two weeks earlier, and the previous death of her 10 week old son. Mr Todd was unable to console her and fell asleep on the bed.
For reasons Ms Baillie cannot explain she stabbed him in the back with a 20cm kitchen knife with such force the blade entered his body right up to the hilt. It punctured his liver and damaged his pancreas and spleen. The 48 year old spent three months in hospital and had to have his lung drained. Medics say that without emergency surgery he would not have survived.
Immediately after the attack Ms Bailley knocked on a neighbour's door and asked them to call the police. She was initially charged with attempted murder but later admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent and says nothing like this will ever happen again.
The pair met last July at a hotel in Beverley where they both worked as chefs and soon moved in together before trying for a baby.
Since the attack Mr Todd has visited her several times in prison and says he has forgiven her. Following a tearful reunion he took a diamond engagement ring to Hull Crown Court last week where he said he wanted to ask his girlfriend to marry him. His barrister has since presented the ring to Ms Bailley who has tried it on and says the ring fits. Mr Todd says she has accepted his proposal and they intend to marry when she is released from prison.
As Judge Mettyear told Tiffany Baillie she would be jailed for three years she rocked back and forth in the dock clutching a cross around her neck. She was led away and mouthed the words 'I love you' to Mr Todd. It is expected she could be released as early as next year.
