Euro blog: the joy of being a fake fan

Tony and I are sitting in a Kharkiv cafe at 3:30 am playing Yahtzee as we while away time before our train back to Donetsk at 6:25. We decided against returning to the sanitarium, just didn't seem worth the hassle for three hours sleep.

We definitely had a better time today than the real Dutch fans! In our Orange shirts we shared in all the fun of the pre match party at the fan zone, dancing and bouncing to a selection of old Dutch favourites, we think! And then following the Double Decker Dutch bus on the 45 minute parade to the ground with bands playing and the streets lined with Kharkivians smiling and cheering as we went by. But the joy of being a fake fan is that you can also admire the artistry of Ronaldo and applaud a great Portuguese performance! You really can have your cake and eat it!

The Dutch just weren't good enough. Looked okay for about 15 minutes and then never looked like scoring again until Van de Vart hit the post near the end. Portugal have pace going forward and are very solid at the back too. Semi finalists at least, I think.

One last thing from today: the Portuguese fans touring Kharkiv cathedral dressed in their footballing best. Their devotion was repaid.
