The funeral is taking place for a soldier from East Yorkshire who was killed in Afghanistan earlier this month.

20-year-old Private Gregg Stone from Hornsea was shot dead while rescuing an Afghan policeman who had been kidnapped in the Nahr-e-Saraj district of Helmand province.

The soldier was part of the 3rd Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment and had been in Afghanistan for just three weeks.

His funeral, with full military honours, will be held at St Nicholas Church in Hornsea.

Private Stone was killed three weeks to the day after arriving in the warzone. His body was repatriated to RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire.

He was the 417th British soldier, the fifth from East Yorkshire, to lose his life in Afghanistan since the start of operations in October 2001.
