Golden girl Jessica Ennis is to be given a champion’s welcome home on Friday with a civic reception in Sheffield in her honour.
Thousands of people are expected to throng the centre on 17th August to catch a glimpse of Sheffield's local hero and her Olympic gold medal.
Jessica, a former King Ecgbert’s pupil and member of City of Sheffield Athletics Club, will be welcomed home by the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Cllr John Campbell, at Barker’s Pool where she will receive the city’s thanks and congratulations on an open air stage.
The event will be a celebration of Jessica’s victory with music, sport and film starting at 4pm and running through to the start of the celebration at 6.15pm. There will then be a private reception for Jessica and her family in the adjacent City Hall from 7pm onwards.
Everyone in the crowd is asked to bring or wear something gold in Jessica's honour.
– Lord Mayor of Sheffield
Jessica is a world beater, Olympic champion and above all a Sheffield girl and we want to welcome her home in style. We want to turn the city centre into a sea of gold. We have all followed her rise to Olympic glory over the years and now we cannot wait to see her back in her home city. She has done Sheffield proud and we want to celebrate her sporting prowess in the place where it all began. I’d urge Sheffielders to come and show their support for Jessica and join in the city’s celebrations.”
